Description
Located in Gujarat, Gir National Park has the distinction of being the only place in the world where you can find the majestic Asiatic Lion. There are a total of about 400 Lions and 300 Leopards in the park, making it one of the largest big cat concentrations in the country. On this tour of this magical land, we’ll spend our time unraveling the mysteries of its lesser-touched parts.

My favourite time to visit Gir

Some may say safari trips are best done in the summer, but for me, October and November are beautiful times to be in Gir National Park. This is the time when the park has just reopened from the monsoon break, and the dry arid landscape has been replaced by green grasses and lush vegetation. Not only does this make a beautiful background for wildlife photographs, but it is also a staple for the herbivores of Gir, such as Spotted Deer, Sambar, and Nilgai, and young fawns are seen with their parents.

This abundance of food travels throughout the food chain. The lush grass means more herbivores, which in turn means more and better sightings of the carnivores of Gir. Lions and leopards are also at their peak activity at this time, and the vegetation makes for some beautiful sightings and photographs.

But it’s not just the bigger residents of the reserve that revel in the greenery. Indian Paradise Flycatchers, Black-naped Monarchs, Indian Pittas, and more, are best sighted at this time. These birds have feasted the entire monsoon on a bounty of insects, and since the winter migrants have not arrived yet, they enjoy a brief peak period of minimum competition.

However, if you wish to enjoy this time of the year as much as the forest denizens, then do plan your Gir visit as soon as possible. A gap during the monsoon means visitors are itching to visit Gir again, and safari permits are, as always, a finite number. I suggest you book soon to avoid the disappointment of missing out on a memorable safari.
